In Loving Memory

Mulvihill, Mary (nee Hughes)

July 16, 1951 - April 1, 2026

Mary Hughes Mulvihill was returned to the arms of her beloved on Wednesday, April 1st, 2026, when she passed away in the home which carried a lifetime of memories. She is preceded in death by the man who welcomed her into heaven, Thomas E. Mulvihill, Mary’s husband of over 50 years; her parents Harry and Evelyn Hughes; and sister and brother-in-law, Evie and Bob Dagenais. She is survived by her sister Kathy Schaeffer and husband Dan; brother Dave Hughes and wife Mary; brother Buzz Hughes and wife Annick; children Meghan Taylor and son-in-law Bill; son Michael Mulvihill and daughter-in-law Michelle; and son Thomas Mulvihill and daughter-in-law Megan; and the center of her universe, grandchildren Gavin, Mairin, Landon, Colin, William, Cameron and Hudson.

The world lost its most selfless, fiercely loving human in Mary Mulvihill.

Mary was born and raised in Webster Groves, and met the eventual love of her life while still in grade school at Holy Redeemer. It was there, and at Nerinx Hall, where she collected her truly lifelong best friends, an amazing circle of women who have stayed close for 70 years. She lived her life with passion and verve, from road trips with her husband Tom, concerts and nights under the stars to channeling that same passion into raising her family. Mary was a renaissance woman, who built a career at Commerce Bank advocating for low income home buyers while also caring for her three children in a myriad of ways. In retirement, she spent time in her garden, floating in the pool and if we’re honest, mostly watching sports. She was a college basketball fanatic, watching more games than professional scouts. Mary attended the games and functions of her grandkids so consistently, every teammate and their parents knew Grandma Mulvihill. Basketball, soccer, baseball, football, orchestra concerts, theatre productions, you name it and she was there. The true legacy of Mary Mulvihill was showing up for those she loved. On her last day on earth, Mary spent it taking her dear friend to a cancer treatment, spending three hours with her before heading to her granddaughter’s soccer game. She was a surrogate mom, friend, partner in crime, Bonus Grandma (BG) and the heartbeat of all those who came to know her love. The deep pain and hurt of losing someone like this is healed with one truth: the most selfless person on earth finally got the only thing she truly wanted for herself — to see her beloved Tom again in heaven.
