Skaggs, James William “Bill”

Skaggs, James William “Bill” of Oakville, Missouri, born on July 14, 1946 in St. Louis Missouri, passed away surrounded by his family on October 26, 2022 in Fenton, Missouri at the age of 76.

He was preceded in death by his parents Junior Woodrow and Dorothy Skaggs, brother Ed (Paula) Skaggs, and brother-in-law Tom Greer.

He is survived by his beloved wife Rita (Steffan) Hendrix Skaggs; sons, William “JW” (Beth) Skaggs, and Timothy Louis “Luke” Skaggs;f step-daughter, Gina (Rob) Groceman; step-sons, Joe (Kasi) Hendrix and John Hendrix; grandsons, James Groceman, Daniel Groceman and Nolan Hendrix; brothers, Jerry (Darlene) Skaggs, Mark Skaggs, and Rick (Karen) Skaggs; sisters Joyce (Tom) Greer, Janet McBride, Dorothy “Doll” (Ken) Sass; nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins and friends.

Bill proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps from May 1967 until July 1969 where he was wounded in action during the Vietnam War.

Bill had a wide array of talents and hobbies to include woodworking, mechanics, music, horse riding, story telling and playing practical jokes.  His careers ranged from NHRA nitrous mechanic and sand dragster racing to starting the Missouri Carriage Company, the first of its kind in downtown St. Louis.  He retired from John Deere landscaping.  Bill was known for his abundant love, big personality, booming voice, jokes, and strong opinions. He was passionate about his mule Rubin, and his dog Suzy Q, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be at Kutis South County Funeral Home, 5255 Lemay Ferry Road, Tuesday, November 1st, 4-8 pm. Service on Wednesday, November 2nd, 10:30 am.  Interment following at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations to Bill’s favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).

    We are very sorry to hear about Bill. He was a great friend and classmate, always full of fun and never met a stranger. I will miss my “Redbird” buddy! The Class of 1965 and the Bland High School Alumni Association members will miss him greatly. Richard & Jo Ann Buddemeyer
