Catherine Sue Gibson

Catherine Sue Gibson of St. Louis, Missouri passed from this life October 18th, 2023. She was born November 21st, 1938 to Verdell and Sylvia Pennington. The oldest of eight children, she was raised on a cotton farm in Watson, Arkansas. After graduating from high school, she moved to St. Louis, Missouri and worked for Bussmann Fuse for 10 years. She met her future husband in St. Louis. Amos and Catherine were married May 1st, 1965.

Catherine was talented at cake decorating, candy making, sewing, flower arranging, and oil painting. She liked to wear pretty, feminine clothes, some of which she made herself. In addition to being artistic and creative, she was an avid reader and found it difficult to pass by a bookstore without going in. She enjoyed journaling and writing short pieces, either about things she had seen and experienced or about the Bible. Catherine was an observant and detail-minded person who enjoyed nature’s beauty. She was patriotic and would talk about how much she loved her country.

In 1961, Catherine was baptized in Jesus’ name and received the Holy Ghost. For over 50 years, she was a faithful member of Apostolic Pentecostal Church. She shared her talents with the church by donating artwork for auctions, setting up scenes and sewing costumes for church plays, and even gluing the bindings of song books to extend their lives. She was involved in the Spanish ministry for about 15 years and spoke with fondness of her “Spanish friends.” She traveled with them to Spanish conferences in other cities and states. She kept Spanish tracts in her purse and often gave them to Hispanic people she met.

Catherine enjoyed learning about different cultures and meeting new people. She was a curious person, interested in the world beyond where she lived, and she had a sense of adventure. She traveled extensively throughout the United States, visited both Canada and Mexico, took two cruises to the Caribbean, and flew to the Middle East twice, once to Jordan and once to Israel. While there, she sewed costumes for children’s plays, attended international and Arabic church services, and prayed with Sri Lankans during home visits.

She is survived by her husband Amos Gibson, son James (Dawn) Gibson, daughter Sylvia (Bill) Ferrin, grandchildren Elijah Gibson and AnaLynn Gibson, brothers Donald Pennington of Dumas, Arkansas, Dennis Pennington and Kenneth Pennington of Watson, Arkansas, sisters Helen Mallett of Shell Knob, Missouri and Patricia Fair of Springdale, Arkansas. She is preceded in death by her father, mother, brother Jerry Pennington, and sister Mary Lou McGill.

Catherine will be dearly missed by her family, friends and church.

Visitation and funeral service will take place at Apostolic Pentecostal Church, St. Louis, Missouri. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 24th from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, October 25th from 10 to 11 a.m. The funeral service will be Wednesday, October 25th at 11 a.m. Pastor Bradly DeLong will be officiating. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Funeral Arrangements are by Kutis Funeral Home.
