  1. What a wonderful uncle he was to me. I remember he was the assistant coach with my dad for my first year of baseball. A fun and engaging guy! And, wow, could he tell a yarn to us young children. One dark evening he told us The Legend of Sleepy Hollow from memory. We were riveted! And he was a talented artist. He could really draw some crazy cartoon race cars. I remember him playing me in badminton at his place in south Boone. Hours of fun! And he always verbally demonstrated appreciation for me being a preacher of the gospel. He certainly believed Jesus was Lord. And in that light, what great hospitality he demonstrated to us when we were in St. Louis multiple times. He showed genuine affection to all eight of us and opened his home for several days. As I reflected on this, it made me realize how much of an impact he had in me, since in my life I decided to practiced these same things. I’ll miss my uncle Jerry!

  2. Dear Aunt Kay, cousins Jenny, Renee and family, my sympathy is truly heartfelt over Uncle Jerry’s passing. Even though there are miles separating us, our family has a strong bond that transcends borders. I am sending you loving wishes of peace and comfort.

Most of my memories of Uncle Jerry are of the young Jerry. My mom Sue would take us to visit her family quite often. Uncle Jerry, Aunt Letty and for a while Aunt Loretta, were still at home. We children weren’t much younger than Loretta, Letty and Jerry. My sister Carol was born the same year as Uncle and my brother Bill was only a year younger, sister Judy two years, me five years, Mike six, and David ten. Rebecca didn’t arrive until most of us had left home so didn’t get to be part of the growing up years with Uncle Jerry. We were more like cousins than nieces and nephews and had some great times. The girls would do stuff together and the guys would, too. I was one of the little kids and we littles had kid crushes on the olders. I looked up to Uncle Jerry. Bill and Jerry became close and I think they got into a bit of mischief now and then. We visited when they lived in the country and also when they lived in North Nashville. I have a vivid memory of an Easter Egg hunt that took place inside the country home because it was raining. I was so jealous because Bill found the silver egg inside the glass globe of a lamp. But we had fun. And of course, all of us loved the food Granny made, especially the buttermilk biscuits with sorghum molasses. I treasure these memories and am thankful for the time with Uncle Jerry.

Uncle Jerry grew up to be such a kind man and a man of faith. I will never forget him. Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. In My Father’s house there are many rooms. I go to prepare a place for you” (From John 1-3). I believe that Uncle Jerry has been lovingly welcomed into his prepared place and that he is reunited with all of our family and his friends. I hope this thought gives you peace and strength as you hold your cherished memories of him in your hearts.
