Charlie was born on August 20, 1934 to Charles C. and Helen C. Eddy (nee Hartmann). He was preceded in death by Rita F. Eddy (nee Coyle), his beloved wife of 59 years, and is survived by their five children Mark Eddy, Matthew Eddy (Jill), Julia Minden (Dan), Charles S. Eddy (Kelly), and Laurence Eddy (Vicki) along with 11 cherished grandchildren – Ethan, Stella, Danny, Addison, Emma, Henry, Charlie, Carson, Holly, Nicholas and Joshua. He also leaves younger sisters Carol Eddy and Mary Ellen Wescovich (Gene), sisters-in-law Judy Eddy and Mary Ellen Brown (Morris), aunts Julia Hartmann and Frances Lucas, many nieces, nephews and cousins, a large extended family, and countless friends. Charlie was also preceded in death by his parents and younger brother Robert Eddy. Born and raised in South St. Louis, Charlie graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1952 lettering in football. He served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Korean War earning the National Defense Service Medal and Army Good Conduct Medal. Through the G.I. Bill, Charlie was able to enroll in night school at St. Louis University while working full-time to support his young family. He graduated from S.L.U. in 1964 with a Bachelors of Arts in History. After working in sales for over 25 years, Charlie realized a lifelong dream when he opened and successfully operated a family packing and shipping business with Rita for over a decade before their retirement in 2001. Charlie loved all sports, especially football and baseball, and often told stories of routinely taking streetcars as a young boy (sometimes alone) in the 1940s to watch Cardinal and Browns games in the old Sportsman’s Park at Grand Boulevard and Dodier Street. The Cardinals won nine World Series championships during Charlie’s lifetime, and he reveled in each one of them with family and friends. In addition to being an avid sports enthusiast, Charlie also enjoyed reading – particularly Civil War and World War II history, Big Band music, tending to his yard, working on cars, and he developed a fondness for fishing later in life. Charlie and Rita were devoted parishioners of Assumption-Mattese Catholic Church for over 40 years until his stroke in late 2018. Charlie considered his marriage and family to be the cornerstones of a life well lived. He will be sadly and profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him. Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for all of your love, prayers and continuing support throughout these difficult times. A live stream of Charlie’s funeral Mass with his family in attendance will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. C.S.T. at Assumption-Mattese Catholic Church.
