In Loving Memory

Eultgen, Wayne C.

May 3, 1942 - March 27, 2026

Fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church, Wayne C. Eultgen died peacefully on Friday, March 27, 2026.

Wayne was born on May 3, 1942 to Arthur and Virginia Eultgen (Justus) in St. Louis, MO. He was raised in Pine Lawn, attended St. Paul Parish grade school, and graduated from DeAndreis High Scholl in 1960. Wayne was a devoted son, loving cousin and Godfather, friend to many, and humble servant of Jesus, His Blessed Mother, and the Catholic Church during his 83 years on earth.

Always a hard worker, Wayne was employed by the St. Louis City Library system for over 30 years. He was the consummate volunteer, donating hundreds of hours to help at Mother of Good Counsel Nursing Home, St. Paul Parish, the St. Louis Cathedral, and St. Elizabeth’s Hall. He spent countless hours on baseball fields, helping to coach and manage hundreds of teen boys who played on St. Paul and Ascension teams.  Several of those former players continued to call and visit him through the years, even up to the week of his death.

Wayne’s volunteering didn’t end on the baseball field. For many years, he collected donations on Natural Bridge Road to benefit the Old Newsboys organization. He also raised money for the St. Louis Christmas Carol Association by singing outside of Goody-Goody Drive-In restaurant at Christmastime. The customers loved him and he loved the hot chocolate that the restaurant’s owner gave him to stay warm! Many of Wayne’s relatives and friends will miss his phone calls to them on their birthdays, when Wayne, after clearing his throat and pausing, would very seriously serenade them with his rendition of “Happy Birthday.” He would always remind the recipient that he “couldn’t sing like Perry Como,” but he “did the best he could.”

In addition to helping to organize missalettes at the Cathedral, he also assisted the maintenance staff at St. Elizabeth Hall by tending to the garden areas in front and the birdfeeders in back. He was a member of the Legion of 1000 Adorers at Mount Grace Convent (the Pink Sisters) and visited the chapel there whenever he could.

During his life, Wayne had many interests and hobbies. He greatly enjoyed Cardinal baseball, college soccer (especially SLU), growing geraniums and other beautiful flowers, raising tomatoes, collecting Christmas decorations and Nativity sets, all the dogs owned by his neighbors and friends (though he never owned a dog himself), McDonald’s Filet-o-fish, strawberry shortcakes, iced tea, Arby’s, and any sweet dessert (until he developed diabetes several years ago). He played checkers well – very well! – but he was modest when he often won.

After leaving his childhood home in Pine Lawn, Wayne moved to St. Elizabeth Hall in Cathedral Towers on N. Newstead. He settled in well and made many friends during his 28+ years there. On March 17, 2025, his health problems necessitated a move to Mary, Queen and Mother Nursing Home in South County – the first time he lived south of Highway 40 in his life!

Wayne was happiest when he could treat a friend to lunch or make a donation to one of his favorite charities. He was humble, self-giving, and, in many ways, child-like in his joy and excitement over simple pleasures. His heart was full of love for God, the unborn, former baseball players, and his many friends from childhood, St. Elizabeth Hall, and the Cathedral.

During his final years, Wayne narrowed his favorite charities to a few, including: the Black Madonna Shrine in Eureka, Covenant Network, Coalition Life, EWTN, and the Pink Sisters at Mt. Grace Convent.

In lieu of flowers, please consider having a Mass celebrated for Wayne or making a donation to one of the charities listed above. Please pray for the repose of his soul and when you think of him, please pray a Memorare – his favorite prayer.

May God bless Wayne – he’s finally home!

  1. It was always a pleasure talking to Wayne about sports and religious related things. He enjoyed going with me to our St Vincent DePaul meetings. I gave him a Cardinal baseball jacket some years ago and he would thank me for it every time we talked.

  2. I met Wayne several years ago at a friends house. He was so kind and very thoughtful. He loved his Catholic faith and most times added a prayer….or two before our meal. Prayers for Wayne. He is resting in Gods arms…,just where he wants to be

  3. Wayne would call us at the Mission Office of the Archdiocese every year requesting Christmas cards to share with those near and dear to him. I never wanted to miss his call and looked forward to it every year. I so enjoyed our conversations. He was such a kind and thoughtful man, and he always remembered us by name and loved to catch up.

He was a great friend to the mission dioceses of the Church as a long-time supporter of The Propagation of the Faith. May he rest in peace.
