In Loving Memory

Green, Rose Shirley

Green, Rose Shirley  (Nan), 87, of South St. Louis, passed away on August 12th.

Rose was born, lived a wonderful life, and died all within a one mile radius of the world famous and also deceased “Famous Barr” department store. After graduating from high school, or maybe somewhat before, she met and married a country farm boy named James-Robert from Appalachia who really did look like Cary Grant.

Rose was the ultimate mother, raising four pretty good kids, Vikki, Jimmy (arguably her favorite), Paula and Robert, who all actually believed they were rich (and the favorite). Rose could transform the poorest-quality meat cut into a world-class dinner. To make money, Rose ironed shirts for guys who wore ties to work, earning a nickel a shirt. She once ruined a shirt and cried for hours after calculating how many ironed shirts it would take to buy the guy a new one. In her spare time Rose taught her 4 kids, 7 grandkids, 12 great-grandkids and 2 great-great-grandkids how to play cards. She lived a good life surrounded by a loving family and she secretly loved the shiny-tight pants wearing, five foot tall (an inch taller than her) singer Tom Jones.

Services: Visitation at Kutis South County Chapel, 5255 Lemay Ferry Road, on Tues. Aug. 16, 5:00 pm until service at 6:30 pm. Service concludes at funeral home. Interment private.

  1. Sorry for your loss. Us South siders really knew how to make things happen for ourselves when all we had in front of us was some basic stuff. Must have been a wonderful Mother.
