Mary Hawkins

In Loving Memory

Hawkins, Mary Ann

December 19, 1931 - September 11, 2024

Hawkins, Mary Ann ‘Mickey’ (nee Kindler), age 92  September 11, 2024.
Mickey was born to George and Ida Kindler, Dec 19th 1931 in St. Louis City.  She was the 5th of 9 children and liked being the true middle child.
She attended St. John the Baptist School and proudly graduated in 1949. She loved her school years and returned often to attend the school picnic.  It was also here that she made many lifelong friends including Joan, Laverne, Ruth, Pat and Marion.
Her friends were integral members in her monthly Club that started after high school graduation and continued until 2020 when the pandemic and age made them unable to get together regularly.

Mickey started working at Southwestern Bell upon graduation and it was there that she met ‘Aunt’ Pat who quickly became her adventure loving,  garage sale buddy.  She left SW Bell and began working for the St. Louis Police Department.  It was at the police department that she met her friend Jane who set her up on a blind date that lead to her 46 year marriage to Don.

Her marriage in 1960 produced  6 children, Dave, Jan, Jill, Paula, Ron and Tom.  Mickey shined as a mother and was always so proud of her kids. She eventually gained 3 daughter-in-laws, Trish, Corinne, Mary and 1 son-in-law, Ed.

Her true joy in life ( besides her coffee and cigarettes)  were her 17 grandchildren. Sarah, Anthony, Katie, Maggie, Jack, Wesley, Bridget, Maddie, Kayla, Daniel, Austin, Meg, Harrison, D.J., Sophie, Mason and Sydney.

Grammy ‘Adventure days’ were special to both Mickey and the grandkids.  Whether it was the zoo, the Alton Giant, the great River Road, Union Station or a unique museum, Mickey provided love, fun and always some kind of snack!

Mickey loved to read and travel and when her children were younger, she and Don would load up the pop up camper and station wagon and travel across the country. Some of her favorite places were  San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas, Niagara Falls,  Grand Canyon and New Orleans.

Later in life, Mickey loved going gambling and ’Hot Shots’ was her game. She started taking each grandchild to the boat after they turned 21.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don and her siblings Toni, Rosie, George, Charlie, Mike and Alice. She is survived by her 6 children, 17 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and her sister Jeanette Husgen.

A world of gratitude to our sister, Paula on being mom’s primary and loving caregiver for the last seven years. We also appreciate the special care given by Jackie, Melissa and Debra from Visiting Angels.

Her passing has left a giant hole in our lives and she will be dearly missed! We are grateful for all the loving memories we have with her.

Visitation Tuesday September 17th 4-7 pm,  Funeral  September 18th, 1 pm St. Justin the Martyr church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital or Salvation Army.
