Dean Hoag

In Loving Memory

Hoag, Dean Robert “Dino”

January 3, 1949 - July 15, 2023

Dean Robert Hoag (known to many as Dino), born January 3, 1949, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 15, 2023, surrounded by family. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, James and Angeline, and his dear brother David (Pat). Beloved husband of Mary (nee Sanders) of 47 years. Devoted father to Catherine Marie and Nicholas Robert. Dear brother of Kim (Leslie), Daniel (Becky) and sister Carol (Kevin) Hoormann. He was a cherished brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend to many.

Dean was a devoted family man who could be found loudly supporting his children from the sidelines at every game. Apart from his family, his two passions in life were baseball and his work as a career prosecutor. Dean could talk for hours about baseball, including countless stories of his time playing in the Cape Cod League while attending Brown University. When a career as a professional baseball player was not an option, he enrolled in law school and upon graduation, joined the Circuit Attorney’s Office in the City of Saint Louis. In 1982, he joined the United States Attorney’s Office, where he served as an Assistant United States Attorney for nearly forty years, primarily in the Organized Crime and Drug Task Force Unit. Dean’s work as a prosecutor brought him immense joy and satisfaction, as he worked tirelessly to protect the community from extremely dangerous criminals, including large-scale drug dealers and murderers. On several occasions during his federal career, Dean was cross-designated by the Department of Justice to prosecute high-profile state-court murder cases. The most prominent of such cases was State v. Edward Post, involving the bathtub drowning of a New Orleans woman by her husband during a weekend trip to Saint Louis. In his retirement, he was appointed by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office to a specially-created Cold Case Unit where he helped solve and prosecute murder cases that had gone unsolved for decades, without justice to the victims and their families.

SERVICES: Visitation will be at Kutis Funeral Home 10151 Gravois Road on Wednesday, July 19 from 4-8 pm. Memorial service will be at Kutis Funeral Home 10151 Gravois Road on Thursday, July 20 at noon. In lieu of flowers, contributions made to The Backstoppers (donations: PO Box 795168, Saint Louis, MO 63179) are greatly appreciated.

  2. I played Freshman Football with Dean at Brown, in the class of 1971. He went on to specialize in baseball, and became the firebrand catcher on our Varsity Squad.

Dean was a bundle of energy and attitude. I can imagine him on the sidelines of his kids games, “loudly” supporting them!

    RIP, Dino.

  5. I remember presenting cases to him in the Circuit Attorney’s Warrant Office when I was a St. Louis Police Officer. He was a one-of-a-kind guy. They make very few like him. He was as tenacious as they come and took his profession very seriously. I always respected his decisions, as did my fellow officers. You never forgot your interactions with Dean. Great guy, the likes of whom who will be sorely missed.

  9. We all know what a great baseball player and tremendous prosecutor Dean was. I had the pleasure of working with him the last five years of my career. Many of those workdays turned into work nights at Colombo’s bar. Plied with a double Dewer’s and a cigar, Dean would pontificate about any subject you cared to discuss. Many of the world’s problems were solved on those evenings. If you were lucky enough to know Dean, you were lucky enough! May the Blessings bestowed upon Dean and his family be as numerous as the shamrocks in dear old Ireland.

  10. The courtroom would generally fill up on the day Dean was to deliver a closing argument, which he would do without the hindrance of notes, and by the time he was done, all the spectators had the same thought, “I hope this guy never prosecutes me.”
    He was the best.

  11. From a retired Franklin County Fire Investigator, Dean Hoag was the most proficient Federal Prosecutor I have ever known. I will always remember his professionalism and demeanor in the courtroom. I feel very fortunate to have worked with Dean in my career. That relationship developed into a close friendship that I will always cherish.

  12. I’ve known Deano since high school and can attest that there is no one who was more passionate about life than he was! Whether it was taking over a floundering Kirkwood football team and quarterbacking it to a victorious season, or successfully prosecuting a criminal case to a guilty verdict, or lovingly “being there” for his wonderful family as they ascended to the mountaintops or visited the valleys of life, or anonymously going the second mile in helping countless people in their time of need….Deano did it with conviction, compassion, energy, determination, dedication and love!
His heart was bigger than he was!
A truer, more loyal friend you will never find!
    Love you Deano!

I know you have a huge sack of happy family memories, and I hope they will help sustain you now in your sadness; and for years to come as you remember him hopefully you will continue to call upon those memories for joy and solace. I know he is resting in peace and love, but let’s think he and Dave are also having good rounds of fun baseball talk!

  16. My condolences to the entire Hoag family on the loss of a Great Man! He was a fantastic prosecutor. I loved to see the expression on the defense attorneys’ faces when they came into the courtroom and knew they were up against Dean. I can hear them say to their clients, ” We need to enter a GUILTY plea .” One of my best memories is the time I spent with Dean and his wonderful family during the “Bey Trial”. We at the U.S. Marshal Service, who had the privilege of working and getting to know Dean, will dearly miss him. A True Professional and Wonderful Guy!! God Bless

  22. I was so saddened to hear of Dean’s passing.
I had been in attendance in the courtroom over many, many years when Dean was prosecuting, whether it was in the Circuit Attorney’s Office or as an AUSA. Many aspired to being a Dean Hoag in the way he prosecuted and handled legal matters, but no one could come close. He loved nothing better than tripping up a bad guy and then using that to skewer him and get another conviction. Having Dean prosecute a case was akin to a slam dunk conviction. It was a joy watching the defendants and their attorneys squirm when it was his turn to cross-examine. He also knew how to make his point, shut up and sit down.
Hope he’s having a stinky cigar and a tumbler of bourbon.

  24. We extend our sympathies to Mary, Cathi and Nick. While Dean was a loving husband and father to them, he was a friend and respected colleague to those of us who worked with him all those years in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He was a uniquely talented prosecutor who won highly publicized, TV-style murder cases among many others. But even greater was is impact on those around him. People were drawn to Dean both professionally and personally. To describe him as memorable would be an understatement. We’ve lost a great one. Our prayers and best wishes are with Mary, Cathi and Nick.

  25. As this flood of tributes shows, Dino was one of the master spirits of our times. I know of none with Dino pure joie de vivre, gusto, readiness for anything and everything life brought his way. He was intrepid, afraid of nothing and no one in court (and out of court as well). His enthusiasm was absolutely infectious. His drive and determination seemingly inexhaustible. Everyone who knew Dino and experienced him in the rich array of these qualities was better off. He leaves a little hole in our world that no one can fill. Our deepest condolences to Mary and the kids.

  26. So much has been said about our dear Dean!
Our best memories are of Dean as a friend.
The Peach children- now adults- remember the parties in our yard after softball games.
He would play “HULK” with them and chase them all over the yard while they loved it.
He will always be in our hearts and memories.
There was no one like you! RIP Dear friend!
Sending our love to Mary and all the family!

  29. I had only worked with Dean for two years when Dean left the Circuit Attorney’s Office to join the U.S. Attorney, but during that time I came to appreciate the passion and determination that he brought to all of his cases, as well as the entertaining and fun side of him at our office parties. Years later, after I obtained an indictment against Ed Post in the murder of his wife, I was so glad when Dean was appointed as a Special ACA to prosecute him. Without Dean, Post would have gone back to New Orleans a free man. Although that case will always represent to me the special talent that Dean brought to the courtroom, it only represents a small part of the man that he was. Rest in peace, Dean. Your zest for life will be missed

  33. Dean and I were in several classes together during our years at Kirkwood High School. I remember him as a very friendly, nice, and intelligent person. He was amazing as our star quarterback on Kirkwood’s football team. He was a bit small for a football player, but luckily could outrun most who tried to take him down. I am happy to know that he had a great career and loving family. RIP Dean.
