Barb and family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. Pat was such a wonderful and talented man. You are all in my prayers.
Brian, Dr. Denny and I are so very sorry to hear about your Dad. We know how close your family is and what your Dad meant to all of you and to this city. He truly was a sports legend but mostly he was a man who loved his family with all his heart. We are praying for all of you at this painful time.

Barb, Lila & family,
We cannot begin to fathom your grief. So sudden & unexpected. Pat always had that beautiful smile and an UNBELIEVABLE sense of humor!
He set the bar high! We have GREAT memories!
What a legend and his accomplishments as a player, teammate, teacher, coach, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, friend….
He will be MISSED!
What I remember most about Pat was that smile. No matter how bad you played that day wheather it be a game or practice at the end of it all he still had that SMILE.
Thanks Coach Pat Mcbribe for the memories and all them smiles
To the Mcbride family sorry for your loss
Multiple contributions , meeting multiple, to the dominance of St. Louis in soccer, to a wildly fun ride in the Arena. A perpetual smile says ‘let’s enjoy. Let’s all enjoy’. .
I am so sorry to hear of Pat’s passing. My condolences to his family.
I remember Pat from Holy Rosary where we both attended grade school. Pat was a few years my senior. He played soccer with my two older brothers, Jim and om Hundelt.
II remember Pat being a good guy and alway with a kind word. He was instrumental in bringing St. Louis to the forefront of soccer, He will truly be missed. Thanks for the memories Pat.
God bless and RIP
I played soccer against Pat many times from parochial school St Engelberts to Kutis!, indoor hoc-soc st Corpus Christi after which we lost contact with each other. Years later I was at the arena on a police call and ran into Pat in the back employee area as he was the coach of the Steamers. He remembered me and we spoke for a few minutes. What a guy, smiling approachable and genuine! The best simply the best player I ever saw. He will be missed. Prayers for Pat and his family for their loss. Heaven has a new midfielder, and the very best!!
Was so fortunate to meet Pat in 1978 when I arrived on Meramec C.C. for XC team, one of my beloved PE instructors, always smiling. Was so proud to see Pat lead the early Steamers teams, later coach at Forest Park,, chatting at high school games & MSHSAA Champ’s tourney. Rip
Dear Barb and Family, We were all so very sorry to hear of Pat’s passing. Please accept our deepest sympathy. Patrick McBride is not only a great soccer player & coach; he is a very kind and loving person, a true Gentleman. I say “is” because of our Faith, our loved ones never really leave us & we will all be together one day: we know that. I met Pat along with Carl Gentile, Carl Schwarzen & Gerry Miller in 1963 when my husband George Mihaljevic established our White Star Soccer Team. Sometimes after practice George would bring the boys home & I would fix a nice meal & we would sit around the table & talk about Soccer. George was so knowledgeable about world soccer, the boys loved to hear him relate wonderful stories of the great players & teams. I will never forget Christmas that year. Pat with the other boys bought Christmas presents for us and our 3 small children: Joey 4, Eva 3 and baby Johnny 1 (Pat coached 3 of my sons at Meramec Junior College: Joe, who Pat helped attain “All American” there; Johnny and George, Jr.). After Jim Leeker got George to agree to being inducted into the Soccer Hall of Fame; that night, Pat came up to George and told him how much he appreciated and loved him. It brought tears to my eyes. These are the things I remember about Pat McBride. I’m 89 years old and looking forward to seeing Pat’s beautiful smiling face to greet me when it’s my time. Mary and the Mihaljevic Family
To the McBride Family,
I was so saddened to hear of Pat’s passing. As a member of The SIUE Athletic Department Family I have so many good memories of Pat. What I remember most was how kind, compassionate and funny he was and how he so dearly loved his family! Even though it has been over 50 years ago I still remember what a positive impact he made on so many lives. What a fitting way for him to be remembered!
Peace to your family!

Pat was the best coach ever. I loved attending his camps and playing for him in college. I was able to connect with him a few years back and it was great to hear his voice. He was a legend!! RIP Pat.
Barb and family:
Please accept my deepest condolences on Pat’s passing. Though he was in Kansas City for just three years, I have a flood of memories from covering those Comets teams of the early 1980s and enjoying his friendship.
We shared a lot of good times, from playing rhythm games in hotel lobbies; the circle games at game-day kick arounds; and putting together his book, The Great Indoors.
Pat’s enthusiasm was infectious. His emphasis on developing American players can’t be overstated. His high-energy Comets teams packed Kemper Arena and built the foundation for turning KC into such a soccer hotbed that has flagship MLS and NWSL franchises and will host 2026 World Cup matches. (And the Comets are still playing)
May his memory be a blessing.
Dear Barb and family,
Please accept our deep condolences for Pat’s passing.
What I remember most about Pat is his smile, kindness, wit and friendship to our family.
We have many memories of the years my dad, Bob Brunette along with Pat ran Burt Ranch Soccer Camp, and later Pat
McBride Soccer Camps. He was a wonderful friend to my dad, and always so thoughtful.
Our prayers are for you and your family during this difficult time.

Pat and I became friends 15 years ago when we were coaching separate youth soccer teams at North Kirkwood Middle School. He approached me about having a scrimmage game. It didn’t matter to Pat that I coached a girls’ team and he coached a boys’ team. To Pat, soccer was soccer and he figured the teams would have fun playing each other since many attended the same school, and he was right.
When I’d see Pat after that, he’d always focus on how my family and I were doing. Pat had more friends than anyone I know, many closer than Pat and me, but he made me feel important each time I was with him. May this kind, humble man rest in peace.
Pat and I would greet one another after mass at St. Catherine Laboure in Sappington. Mostly small talk but he always had something positive to say. REST IN PEACE my Friend.
As a young child I lived in North St. Louis across the alley from the McBrides. It would be hard to find such a welcoming, loving family. In recent years my husband and I occasionally ran into Pat out and about and he remained throughout his life the same friendly outgoing man. Always a smile to brighten the day. Our sincere condolences to Barb, his children and grandchildren. He will be missed greatly.
Pat never allowed his competitive spirit to interfere with his relationships with teammates, opponents, players he coached and friends. A perfect gentleman who always thought of others first and how they could capitalize on their strengths, both on the field and off. Though we were four grade levels and at least three birth years apart at Holy Rosary, he also encouraged and welcomed the younger guys to the game in the school yard, to the experience and to respectfully sharing what he knew. He was also interested in things that you did beyond soccer and baseball. He wanted to know how your family was, how school was going and your future plans. You don’t see that in older grade schoolers. That came from a loving and respectful family that I know he paid forward to his family. RIP Pat.
Dear Barb and family
I was sorry to hear of Pat’s passing.
Knowing Pat since grade school at Holy Rosary and then getting to play hoc soc at Corpus Christie, it’s hard to believe he is gone.
RIP
I knew Pat from the time we at St. Engelbert’s played Holy Rosary in soccer; then as classmates at SLUH and SLU, and after we graduated. When I lived in St. Louis, I would run across Pat from time to time, usually at one of the local horse racing tracks, an activity which we both enjoyed. Pat was, of course, a great soccer player at all levels, including playing internationally for our country. And, also a super coach for various teams throughout his career. Through it all, Pat was always a terrific guy – friendly, positive, helpful, humble, a role model for many. Very sorry to hear of his sudden passing. My condolences to his wife and family. He is in heaven now, which is the ultimate goal for all of us.
Dear Barb, Tim, Kelly and Brian,
I hope the deep pain of your loss is more bearable knowing that Pat had such a profound impact on so many lives. He preached incessantly about demonstrating the intangibles on the field and in life. Courage, determination, sacrifice, flexibility, teamwork. He coached thousands of people that when you aspire to those, the most important intangible will naturally follow – luck. I am lucky to have had Pat as a guiding light in my life.
Coach had such an impact in my life. He changed my direction in my life. A great coach, a better person. I loved that man and so did my wife who worked at southview school..
Pat was a year ahead of me at Holy Rosary parish school in north St. Louis and we were again at school together as undergraduates at SLU in the mid-60s, where I occasionally helped him write a term paper or two. Like everyone else who has memorialized Pat in this comment book, I remember him as sweet, funny, kind, and self-effacing. When I heard about his death while watching the evening news, I was reminded of a poem by Rupert Brook and I repeat it here for Pat’s family and for all those north St. Louis kids who grew up and played CYC soccer with Pat in a kinder and gentler time:
With rue my heart is laden
For many a friend I had
For many a rose-lipped maiden
And many a light-foot lad.
By brooks too broad for leaping
The light-foot lads are laid,
The rose-lipped maids lie sleeping
In fields where roses fade.
So saddened by the passing of this particular light-foot lad. Rather than rest, may he run with joy on the eleysian fields. And may his family rejoice in the thought that he’s happy doing that which brought him such joy in life.
Barb and family my deepest sympathy on the passing of Pat.
It was a honor to have known Pat he was such a kind loving compassionate positive person a true gentleman loved life made such a positive impact on so many people on and off the field memories that will last a lifetime he will be deeply missed.
Barb and family you are in my thoughts and prayers always and may god bless and watch over you Pat may you rest in peace.
