Nanine (Nan) Chassaing Thomas, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away surrounded by her loving children on Monday, October 23, 2017. Nan was born on January 6, 1931 and lived her entire life in the City of St. Louis except for the years 1985-1997 when she lived in Savannah, Georgia. Devoted wife of the late William Edward Thomas, and loving mother of Eddie (Lisa Rinehart) Chassaing; Billy (Annie Kauffman), Barry (Patty Riegel), Kay Kay (Steve) Bossaller, Sean (Cheryl Goeble), Nanette, and Colleen Thomas. Grandmother of Katie and Will Chassaing; Joey, Tatyana, Christian, Caleb, and Bethany Thomas; Olesya (Alan) Mahurin; Kari Groover; Tommy (Kara), Lauren, and Michael Bossaller; Ben (Erin Luna), Kevin, and Claire Thomas; and beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Bill, Nan was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Julius Chassaing and Marian Darst Chassaing, her brother, Edward (Ned) Chassaing, her sister, Mary Chassaing Phillips, and two infants, John and Joseph Thomas.
Nan worked as a bookkeeper early in her career and a travel agent in the 1980s, but her true calling was caring for babies and children, whether her own, her grandkids, or others she babysat, such as Danny and John McGuire, or the children at the Jewish Educational Alliance of Savannah, Georgia. Nan’s Catholic faith was very important to her, and she was active as a volunteer in many church activities, including support for numerous pro-life causes.
Services: Visitation Friday, October 27, 5-8 pm. at KUTIS AFFTON CHAPEL, 10151 Gravois Rd. Funeral Saturday, October 28, 10:00 am., St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, 6303 Nottingham Ave., St. Louis, MO 63109. Interment Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Our Lady’s Inn or Alzheimer’s Association of St. Louis or to the charity of your choice appreciated.
