  16. Matt has been a true friend to our family for over a decade. We will cherish our memories of Matt rooting on the Blues (especially during the 2019 Championship season), competing at pinball, laughing & chatting at our Wednesday night BBQs, and especially cooking his delicious feasts for our annual Friendsgiving. It was apparent that Matt was at his happiest when he was whipping up a tasty meal to be shared with his friends. Whether he was shipping in alligator to cook for a backyard crawfish boil or bringing us meals after our daughter was born, it was clear that cooking was how Matt showed love. We were lucky to call Matt our friend and we will miss him greatly. We send our heartfelt condolences to his parents, brother, & family.

  24. Deeply saddened to hear about Matt. We offer our sincere condolences to all of Matt’s family and friends. Welker and I met at work and he brought me in his vintage copy of the Sirens of Titan quickly after that first meeting, seemingly annoyed I had never read it. I was told I could keep it as long as I wanted under two conditions 1) I had to read it 2) I couldn’t lose it. I managed to keep the promise, returned it a week later, and now own everything he ever wrote. Quickly went from hanging out after work, to Matt spending some nights on our couch in our old tiny house. I was worried he would be annoyed when we asked him to be in our wedding. Matt seemed touched and was the best reluctant groomsman ever. Over the years we camped, watched a lot of hockey, and spent many nights just talking. The most genuine person I’ve ever known and although he liked to tease me about anything and everything Matt had a true heart of gold. He was really there for me when my dad passed and Matt even got to catch a couple games with him over the years. My father held Matt in his highest regards. When the Blues finally won it Matt knew I couldn’t truly celebrate without my dad and instead of calling me to celebrate he called to check on me and see if I needed anything, although we had never discussed anything except extreme celebrations in the unlikely event. I could write so much more but already know Matt would be disappointed by my grammatical errors and paragraph spacing. Matt made me a better person. I will cherish the memories we made together. Wishing the Welker family strength and courage through this painfully difficult time.
