  1. My condolences to the family. She was a teacher at Wedgwood when I was in grade school and a sub when my kids went there as well. Incredible teacher.

  3. I had Mrs. Fone as a second grade teacher at Wedgwood Elementary. She and her husband were way ahead of the game in education. Some of her practices are now commonplace, but at the time were cutting edge. Learning Spanish in second grade? Doing a whole play in Spanish? Still some great memories of that time, though they are fleeting.

  5. What a marvelous lady, taken from us way too soon, with so many of her final months in pain that she never deserved. I’m constantly thinking now of all the occasions I missed being around Joan and Don while I was in St. Louis, always working nights and weekends. Our hearts were with Joan for the last year, and with Don now, for standing by her so strongly as she did for him when he was seriously ill. She is already dearly missed.

  7. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. She will forever be my favorite teacher. I was in her classroom back in 1974/75. I loved learning Spanish in her class. She made learning fun, and was always so patient and kind with her students. Rest In Peace, Mrs. Fone.

  9. Joan was a great sister and sister-in-law. Even after we moved to Denver in 2010, Joan came out to visit us every summer. She had a great time with our 4 grandkids and we all loved being with her. Even last summer they all went for a hike in the Rocky Mtns. Joan was always up for having fun.

  11. I always admired the Fones as a student at Wedgewood. She had the most interactive and fun classroom, and she would often stop by after school and help her husband with the PROBE program. What a legacy she leaves behind! Her love of teaching and passion for education no doubt launched a thousand stars.

  15. Joan was a master teacher. I Never heard her raise her voice but instead had a notable peace and calm about her that I believe was a part of her strong faith. If she called you friend, you were blessed. She cared about others with a passion and was always loyal and selfless. Till we meet again Joan Fone, you’ll be greatly missed!

  21. My family and I will really miss Joan. She was such a fun aunt to me and great-aunt to my two sons! We enjoyed her visits to Denver every summer for the last 10 years or so. Joan was always up for anything – lunch with my sister and me, tagging along to See’s candy store or IKEA or the restaurant supply store, hiking in Red Rocks Mountain Park, and a couple of Colorado Rockies baseball games! I am so grateful for all of these wonderful memories. Also want to thank Don for taking such good care of Joan.

  23. Joan was a compassionate teacher and friend. She had been teaching about 4 years when I was a young new teacher at Wedgwood . I was supposed to be the new third grade teacher but things got mixed up and I needed to teach second grade . That was a blessing in disguise because Joan became my mentor. She never raised her voice to the students and she was just beaming with kindness. She was a super model showing us younger new teachers how to work well with these children . She was so patient with the children and this new group of teachers . She was so kind and helpful.
Later in retirement she organized monthly lunches . It was so nice to get the retired teachers together again . We will miss Joan . Don I know you will miss Joan terribly . You will be in my prayers .

  25. I am heartbroken to hear about Joan’s passing. Andy and I always considered Joan and Don to be dear friends. So many sweet memories – going to the Muppet movie together, the Casablanca Birthday party, playing with our 4 Lhasa Apsos -it doesn’t seem that long ago.
My heart goes out to Don – I will keep you in my prayers.

  27. My heart aches. Months later, I just heard the sad news. May the good memories last a lifetime. I remember the fun times on the tennis court. May it be of some comfort to know friends care. She may be gone, but never forgotten.
