Lee-Kathleen

In Loving Memory

Lee, Kathleen A.

Kathleen Lee, Beloved wife of Kristine Shannon, Loving daughter of Alice and the late Allen Lee, Brother and Sister-in-Law Jeffery and Loretta Lee and  Favorite Aunt of Christopher Lee. Daughter-in-Law of Ronald Shannon and the late Doris Shannon. Kathleen was a dear friend to many, and she will be greatly missed. She passed away unexpectedly on Sunday October 23, 2022, at the age of 56. Kathleen was raised in Martinsville Illinois. She attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale where she received both a Bachelor and Master’s degree.  She resided in St. Louis until the time of her death.

Kathleen was passionate about providing support to people with differing levels of ability, which was evident by her work with Paraquad, various Veterans groups, Cornell University and numerous organizations that offered mentoring and help to all those in need.

Kathleen lived in Soulard for fifteen plus years and was a friendly smiling face at parties and the many celebrations on the island. She loved a good time, and if she could put on some bling, a fancy pair of cowboy boots and a giant watch, well, she was as happy as she could be.

Kathleen never met a stranger, and any new face was an opportunity to make a new friend. She was always up for an adventure, a party or “just one more”, and many of us have paid the price for that “one more” the next day. She was loud, lived life to the fullest and when you saw that twinkle in those blue eyes you knew you were in for a memorable night. We all have so many memories of fun times with Kathleen, we will miss those.

As many know, Kaz loved riding her Harley and spent many a day with the wind in her hair cruising the highways and side roads. She loved that bike and the powerful roar. She was always happy on her white bike.

Kathleen had a soft spot for stray cats and would often feed those she saw in the neighborhood. She loved all animals and if there was a dog in the house, you knew she would be on the floor loving and petting it. She was caring and kind, she was silly and funny, she was a hard worker and a hard player.  She did everything with gusto and had a zest for life that was unmatched. She also had a quiet side and often struggled balancing the two. She was most comfortable in a crowd but could sit for hours and have a quiet conversation with you that always left you feeling better. She was a loyal friend to so many and loved to spend time with those she cared most about. She loved her life with Kris and the cats. They enjoyed traveling and she frequently talked about the next big trip.  She always wanted to retire to the water, to a house by the sea, and said the beach was her happy place, but she was truly most happy anywhere with her family and friends.

The world has lost a bright shining light and we will all miss her every day. Rest in peace our dear sweet friend, and until we meet again, we will see your smile in the stars, the twinkle of your eye in the sun, and hear your voice in the wind. In the words of David Hawkins, “You can shed tears that she is gone, or you can smile because she has lived.” And Kathleen knew how to live!

A Memorial service will be held at Kutis Funeral Home, Affton Chapel, November 12, 2022.  Visitation from 2-3:15 with Memorial Service to follow.

In lieu of flowers donations in Kathleen’s memory to Alzheimer’s Association and suicidepreventionlifeline.org

  7. Kaz was on the best people to ever come into my life. For over 20 years I have called her my friend. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for her and nothing she wouldn’t do for me. She was the only person in the entire world who I knew that owned 200 plus pair of sunglasses !

For all the good times and bad times, Kaz was always there.

I am extremely heartbroken to hear of this, and if there is any way I can help, please let me know.

  11. My heartfelt condolences to Kathleen’s family, especially Kris.. I am so blessed to be able to call her a friend. She was there for me countless times. She called me the minute my sister took her last breath. She had an uncanny sense of knowing when she was needed and being there before you even realized it. I am heartbroken and numb. I will miss the twinkle in her eye, her vivacious laugh and most of all her sincere friendship. Until we meet again Kaz, RIP.

  21. Heaven gained an angel yet she left her footprints for us to follow. Kaz is not a friend but a mentor that I looked up to when I was under her wings. The best advice she gave that became my foundation to become a strong leader, is “ the ability to walk forward with knives in your back.” It stuck with me ever since.

She loves the Rolling Stones!!! We could talk for days about the Stones!!!!

Today I’m in a world of pain but the memories we had is a lifetime to remember. I’m going to miss you!!!

  35. I am so grateful for my most recent experience with Kaz. She would ride up on her motorcycle, and strut through my yard to hang out for a spell. She volunteered to be my Disability Advocate, would come over when I was too weak and blind to type, and coached me step by step what to do. She acknowledged and recognized my disability, and helped me with the first step of self-acceptance. Her coaching and advice has been invaluable, as she said that she’d like to help everyone, one person at a time. She picked me, and helped me in a way only she could.
    Peace

Although we weren’t in close contact recently, we had kept in contact over the years to catch up with each other. I will always remember how fun and boisterous she was any time we were together. We had a lot of fun in our travels for work back in the day. My sincere condolences to Kristine, her family and her numerous friends in this sudden loss. May she rest in peace, and may you all soon find comfort in the many loving memories of a life well-lived.

I am so heart broken by this sad news.
I hired Kathleen at Paraquad when she had just graduated from U. Of Illinois , Carbondale , and all bushy eyed! She was employed to be an employment specialist for a PWI grant. We were great colleagues together and remained friends when I left PQ.
One of my memories was her contacting me , asking if I would role played her interview with a new prospective job . That day , I was not feeling well but she begged me to come over . She came over and we went over possible questions . She got the job!
I was always proud of her ability !
Indeed, she was a lot fun to be with and that is how I want to remembered her. In New Orleans , Seattle or Detroit attending conferences . Later , I will texted her to meet me at Hammerstone’s when I was in Soulard.

Peace to her and the family .

Through the years, she supported provider groups, contractors, and civil rights agencies in finding mutual goals and shared perspectives. Our collective experiences provided me with a sense of accomplishment; but Kathleen always strove to truly make a difference in helping disenfranchised groups. Kathleen, I cherish and will sorely miss your friendship, collaboration, infectious laughter, and sharing of life stories. Your leaving is part of the poignancy of life and although life goes on … know that you really touched me as a kindred spirit during your time here.

Kathleen was a close colleague of mine during her final few years at Cornell’s Yang-Tan Institute. She brought a mountain of charm and enthusiasm to her work. During the tough year of 2020/COVID, she was a bright spot in my Zoom-based world of work. I will never forget her concern about photos chosen for her Combat2Careers project about veterans with disabilities; she insisted that the photos be realistic and pointed out that stock photos of college students in ROTC uniforms should not make the cut! I learned a lot from her.

Kathleen loved to say “teamwork is dream work.” Kathleen, may you dream on in peace.

  83. Kaz was a force to be reckoned with. She was one of the most upbeat people I had ever met. She was also one of the blingyest people I have ever met and she loved a big watch to match her big personality. I had tried to call her about a week or so ago to let her know I had finally landed a “real job” at a not-for-profit and that I was finally in a good head space. I was sad that it went to VM, but I know she is looking down and screaming, “You got this!” We didn’t get to talk often enough, but I know she is at peace. Time for the ultimate cruise!

  93. I’m at a loss for words. I know we lost touch after I moved to Texas, but I never went a day without thinking of my best friend,we did all kinds of crazy stuff together. Riding our bicycles to Niebargers pond and driving our parents nuts, trying to find us. There are so many more memories, I’m just blown away. Never thought I’d see something like this. Jeff and Loretta and Alice you have all my prayers. I’m glad Kaz lead a wonderful, happy life. I’ll always miss her.

  115. Jim and I enjoyed both Kathleen and Kris when they came to Arizona to visit. Jim loved cowboy boots but his poor old feet wouldn’t let him wear them. He was delighted when found that they fit Kathleen. Kathleen was even more delighted at the many boots he gave her. I can still see her trying on each one and prancing around showing them off. She was a delight. She always had a beautiful smile and ready to enjoy life. Will miss her. Kris, a big hug to you. Stay strong.

You made so many beautiful connections over the 35 plus years I’ve know you. You lived life full throttle and you weathered so many storms. I will try my best to hold on to only the joyful memories: that picture of you with the Stanley Cup; that picture of you and Stormy Daniels; the NILG conventions, the STLBLN events that you chaired; our trip in April to DEAMcon22 in San Diego, seeing you at my concert on Good Friday, hanging out in my yard during Covid, and all the joy and laughter in between. You made the world a better place and made me a better person. Thank you for being a part of my life. Ride on, Kathleen. Be at peace. ❤️

    But I’ll face it
    I’ll feel it
As your memory washes over me.
    One day at a time.
    One wave at a time.
    For such a love,
Grief is the price of admission
The cost of the human condition.
So, I’ll pay it over and over again
    Until I see you again.
    The love was worth it.

I’m not ready for you to be gone my friend

The stories and photos and shared memories made it clear that her time here touched so many different people. Her absence will be felt for a long time because of how strongly we felt her presence while she was here.

Jack and I send you our love and sincere condolences on the passing of Kathleen. We loved our dinners with you two over the years. May God bless you and hold you close.

Kaz had been my friend since the first week I started at Paraquad in 1996. She was a true leader in the disability community, especially in the area of employment. Her enthusiasm for Indiana, Mizzou, the Blues and the Cardinals was unparalleled. I remember she took me for a joy ride on her Harley when I turned 40 and we ended up at a less than reputable establishment for libations. I thank God that she was my friend. A true blessing to me and all who knew her.

You were such a force of nature, a luminous bright light, my heart aches at this thought! I can’t believe you are gone my friend Kaz!! The world is a lesser place now. I am stunned!! My heart felt condolences go out to you Chris, and to Kathleen’s family. I heard so much about Kathleen’s Mom and Dad, and Brother and Nephew, she adored you all, and would light up at the mention of each of you, she truly loved you with all her heart! I absolutely knew that, even though I never had the pleasure of meeting any of you. I am so very sorry that I missed that very important day, because I would not have been absent had I known. I loved Kathleen as well. From the moment we met, she treated me with such kindness, generosity, and respect! I can honestly say, that I have not known anyone else who was the caliber of authenticity as Kathleen Lee! My heart is very heavy, this is really tough. I am so very sorry, this is a great loss. I am so very fortunate to have called her my friend, I am a better person for having known her. Chris, please feel free to call or text me if you ever want to, 314-952-1913. Sincerely, Molly McBride
