Frieda Lopinot passed away on October 22, 2022. Frieda was born on August 4, 1926, in East St. Louis, Illinois, to Adolf Volkmann and Frieda (Fischer) Volkmann. She was preceded in death by siblings Rudolf Volkmann, Elsa Franz, Earnest (“Heine”) Volkmann, Adolf (“Sykes”) Volkmann, Anna Delamater, Erna Seiss, Carl (“Doggie”) Volkmann and Mathilda (“Tillie”) Andrzejewski. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul, and sons Mark and Dale. She is survived by son Neal and his wife, Sharon; daughter-in-law, Regina; grandsons Michael, Jeff, Justin, Eric and Steven; granddaughters Kyra Lopinot, Jennifer and Carrie; and nine great-grandchildren.
Frieda attended a private Catholic high school and Washington University, earning a Fine Arts degree in 1949.
She married Paul and together had a loving family of three boys. Frieda was a very busy homemaker and continued painting her entire life. She was known as an exceptional landscape artist. Her living son and daughter-in-law, her grandchildren and several of her nieces and nephews have her artwork, some with walls covered with paintings not unlike one would see in a museum. She also did volunteer work for the VA and was an active participant of the Monday Club in Webster Groves for over 40 years. She taught art classes there and also sang in nursing homes with fellow volunteers. Paul and Frieda traveled to many distant places, and she recorded many of those memories in sketch books. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, and will be missed by family and friends alike.
Visitation at Kutis Affton Chapel 10151 Gravois Rd. 63123 on Saturday, October, 29, 2022 from 11:00 am until funeral service time at 1:00 pm. Interment at St. Paul Cemetery (Columbia, Il.)

I have known Frieda for couple years as a caregiver. She reminded me of one of my great aunts. I loved coming over to see her and to help her was whatever she needed. She used to chase me up the hallway with her walker and she would make noises like revving up a car engine. She would say look out I’m gonna run you over. She was a very loving and caring woman. She would always tell you that she loves you and she would put her lips together giving me kisses. I am going to desperately miss her. I love you Frieda and here’s your kisses

I had the pleasure of being a caregiver for Frieda for a couple of years. She had a smile that would warm your heart. She had a lot of spunk and was very independent. She liked to tease me and say “You better go wash those dishes” and get a fake stern look on her face. She would thank me everytime I worked with her and tell me she appreciated what I had done for her that day. I always left feeling good knowing she felt taken care of and cared for. She liked old movies and we would tell each other which leading man we thought was handsome. One of her greatest pleasures was sitting on her back porch. She lived to feel the breeze, watch the birds and just enjoy being outside. I was awestruck when I first saw Freida’s artwork. She was truly a gifted artist.
She had a way about her that was comforting, you felt like all was right with the world when you were with her. We shared laughter, conversation and the quite of sitting on her back porch. I will miss that smile, her warmth and that comforting feeling. I know she is now at peace and I am grateful that her struggles are over.
Love you Freida, thanks for all you did for me.

I was one of Frieda’s caretakers also. I could not have said it better than Deva. Deva really described what it was like caring for Frieda. Frieda was such a special, loving, kind, caring, wonderful lady. It was never a job going to care for Frieda. It was always like going to visit a loving relative. Thank you Fritzie for the last 7 years I was able to spend with you. I will never forget them. I am going to steal one of my favorite sayings of yours, ” It was delightful!!”

Frieda and Paul were my 2nd parents when I lived in St. Louis. I enjoyed many meals prepared by this wonderful woman, and have 2 of her pieces hanging in my home now. She was an exceptional lady with a fantastic sense of humor – she had to with 3 sons and Paul! Thank you Frieda for everything you did for me during my time in St. Louis, and for continuing to welcome me and my family into your home in subsequent years. You will be missed by so very many.

Neal and Sharon,
My husband and I met Dale thru our son David at Lindbergh High school and soon
met Frieda, who was to become my best friend forever. It would take a book to tell you about the places and times we had together. The best years of our lives. I am blessed to have a few of Frieda’s paintings. There will never be a day in our lives without the memory of Frieda crossing our minds. She will always be in our thoughts.. God blessed you Neal , to have had this amazing woman as a Mother.

Dear Neal,
Susan and I were saddened to hear of your mother’s passing. Even though we never had the pleasure of meeting her, as evidenced by the condolences, your mother was a very special and accomplished lady. Our hearts go out to you and Sharon for your loss.
