Beloved husband of Mary B. Vorhies (nee Quinlisk); dear father of Laura (Mike) Steinmetz and William (Michelle) Vorhies; loving grandpa of Andrew and Cameron Steinmetz and William, Bennett and June Vorhies; respected brother of Paula, Lee, Michael (Mare), Susan (Randy), Mark (Terri), Max, Theresa (Robert) and Barb (Bud); adored brother-in-law Rick (Kerri), Patti (Bill), Liz (Rick), Colleen (Geoff); cherished uncle and godfather of Scott, Kellen, John (Megan), Colin; admired uncle of Tina, Kevin (Laura), Ken, Joanie, Joe (Angela), Megan, Alex, Erin, Alyssa (Danny) David (Wendy), Adam, Taylor, Kristen (Danny), Ashley, Elizabeth (Scott), Jay (Lish), Eric, Danny, Richard (Adriana), Peter (Sarah), Joe, Paul, Erin (Roger);great uncle, cousin and friend.

Bill or Van, as he was known by his siblings, spent his life in the service of others.

Since the early 80s he was a dedicated member of the South Side Optimist Club, an organization near and dear to his heart. He served as President, Vice President and Treasurer and spearheaded the annual trivia night, the charity food drive, Kozy nut and chocolate sales and the oratorical contest.

Since the mid-80s he has helped to run the finance room for St. Joan of Arc Homecoming coordinating countless volunteers to help the weekend run smoothly and helping to insure the correct money came in and went out. He was truly interwoven into the fabric of the SJA community through the years, coaching CYC teams, reffing, and helping to coordinate boys CYC volleyball in the city. He also was an usher and Eucharistic Minister. He helped run the finance side of the flea market. Most recently he joined the Holy Name Society. He found great peace in participating in the Kings House retreat every year and always made sure those who wished to be included could get there.

For many years Bill also served the Affton Hockey community through the rink board and the board of governors. In his time he watched a son and two grandsons and countless others play for the club he loved. Affton celebrated 50 years in the community this year and it’s safe to say Bill had a hand in forging the entity that Affton has become.

It’s hard to summarize a life, but through the lives Bill has touched and those he loved and will continue to love him his legacy will live on.

Services: Visitation at Kutis Affton Chapel, 10151 Gravois, on Tuesday, December 27, 4-8 p.m. and at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church Wednesday, 9 a.m. until Mass at 10 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. 9. Thank you for always encouraging me to do a King’s House retreat.
Though I’ve been committed to Jesuit White House retreats over the years, I’m glad I finally did a Kings House retreat with you last year. Rest in God’s Peace.

  23. The amount of hours (and headaches) Mr. Vorhies endured managing our travel hockey teams down at Affton over the years will never be forgotten and will always be appreciated. I was very sorry to hear the news of his passing. My prayers and thoughts go out to all of those close to Mr. Vorhies, especially his family.
