In Loving Memory of James Alan Gardner
On March 10, 2025, our hearts were broken with the passing of James Alan Gardner, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, brother-in-law, and friend. Jim was 75 years old.
He was the devoted husband of 23 years to Sandy Tschani Horton Gardner, and a loving father to Crista Ann Gardner Collins and Justin Michael Horton Gardner, as well as furry companions Bella and Penny. He was also a proud grandfather to Casey Ann Collins and William Cody Collins, and a beloved brother to Steven Michael Gardner (Kathy) and Janet Gardner Kaiser (Vince).
Jim was born in Evansville, Indiana on October 4, 1949, to the late William Maurice Gardner and the late Barbara Ann Wright Gardner Lehr. When he was 11 years old, the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where Jim grew up and eventually graduated from Vianney High School. He attended Mizzou and went on to earn his degree from the University of Missouri St. Louis. For much of his career, Jim worked in banking, where he was known for his strong work ethic and attention to detail.
Jim’s true passions were family, sports, and travel. He and Sandy were fixtures at St. Louis Rams games, often found behind the bench, and Cardinals games, sitting behind home plate. They attended two Super Bowls and several World Series. Over the years, they traveled extensively, with many fond memories of cruises and trips, including many to Disney World, where he and Sandy were married, and their recent return from Hawaii. Jim loved sharing these experiences with his son Justin, and together, they enjoyed countless adventures. Jim deeply cherished his time with his daughter Crista and his grandchildren. His eyes would light up when they were mentioned. He also shared a deep bond with his sister and brother. Most memorable are the six annual dinners to celebrate the birthdays of the siblings and spouses as well as the annual Wright Family Reunion on Labor Day weekend. He had an interest in American History. He and Steve embarked on three memorable trips centered on the American founding period.
Jim will be remembered as a warm, welcoming, and gentle soul who could brighten any room. His kindness, sense of humor, and quiet strength will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. Though we will miss him deeply, we take comfort in our memories and the impact he made on our lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that contributions be made in Jim’s honor to the Downs Syndrome Association of St. Louis (dsagsl.org).
Jim’s love, laughter, and legacy will live on forever in the hearts of his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, March 14, 2025, from 11 am to 1 pm, at Kutis Funeral Home Chapel, 5255 Lemay Ferry Road, St. Louis, MO 63129.
