In Loving Memory

Harland H. Horn Jr.

Harland H. Horn Jr.

Born February 4, 1928 – Died January 28, 2019

Retired International Brotherhood of Teamsters Union Leader, Harland Horn Jr., passed away January 28, at the age of 90.  Mr. Horn, a long time member of Teamsters Local 610, began work as a Union delivery driver for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper.  After a few years as a driver, a position became vacant within the Local’s Office and he decided to run for the Office.  He was elected and over the years advanced through the elected offices with in Local 610, to the highlight of his career.  Jimmy Hoffa, President of the IBT, chose him to be a member of the team Mr. Hoffa was putting together in an effort to bring the IBT to the city of Philadelphia in the late 50’s and early 60’s.  The effort in Philadelphia was successful and Mr. Horn returned to Local 610 in St. Louis.  He eventually won election to the top job as the Local 610 Secretary-Treasurer/Principal Officer.  He had been retired for many years at the time of his death and he will be remembered as a tough, but effective leader, with a heart of gold.  The tough demeanor was exceeded only by the kindness displayed to his friends and family members and especially to all those in the workplace, who had gained his respect.

Mr. Horn enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was trained as a cook.  After his retirement from Local 610, his love of baking, especially Cinnamon Rolls, became his trademark.  He baked them often and enjoyed bringing them to friends and workers at his bank, his doctor’s office, the Post Office and many other places, and especially to many of his family members.  Everyone loved to see him arrive with the treats he baked especially for them.

Harland and his wife Betty were avid baseball and hockey fans.  During their early years prior to retirement and after, they attended many of the home games of the Cardinals and the Blues.

Mr. horn passed away after a brief illness and with his passing was reunited with the love of his life, his beloved Betty Ann, who passed away in 2006.  His broken heart has now been mended.

Harland H. Horn Jr. was the youngest of the seven children of Gertrude and Harland H. Horn Sr. and was preceded in death by four sisters, Emily Metz, Gertrude Killian, Ellen Works and Ruth Wallace and two Brothers, John W. Horn Sr. and Arthur W. Horn.

Harland and Betty are survived by numerous friends and loving and caring Nieces and Nephews from both of their families and will definitely be missed by all
