November 5th, 1976 he was married to the love of his life Mary Elizabeth “Liz” (Joost) Lanigan. They have 2 children, Laura M. Lanigan and James R. Lanigan III.
Jim was always very dedicated to his work and found much success in finance & banking. His career started in 1974 when he was hired at First National Bank in the bond department. He worked his way up to Vice President by the age of 30. In 1984, an opportunity presented itself for Jim and 3 other members of the First National Bank bond department to start their own company. This partnership with Ken Bretthorst, Albert Lauth and Michael Atkin created First St. Louis Securities, Inc. Together their objective was to build up portfolios of small independent banks in five states. They found such great success that other larger financial entities came proposing mergers and acquisitions. In 2007, they accepted one of those proposals and were acquired by MidWest Independent Bank of Jefferson City. After being acquired the company became First Bankers’ Banc Securities, Inc. In 2014, after 30 years in the business, Jim retired from his role as President & CEO at First Banker’s Banc Securities, Inc.
