In Loving Memory

Manning, Vincent James

Manning, Vincent James on Feb 3, 2022, at the age of 89 and surrounded by his wife and children, our family leader was called to the Lord. We will do our best to imitate the man, and his song will forever be in our souls. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Alma Louise (Wilkiewicz) Manning for 66 years. His living legacy includes his daughter Patti Martineau (Joe) and son James Vincent Manning (Theresa); his 3 grandchildren Kim Onder (Dan), Richard Vincent Meyer (Abby), and Robert Martineau; and his 5 great-grandchildren Isabelle, Jacob Vincent , Joey, Sadie & Faye. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Vina (Conley) Manning.

Born in St. Louis, Vince was a retired St. Louis County Police Captain, proudly serving his community for 36 years. He was a member of St. Timothy’s and St. Mark Roman Catholic Church for 57 years, and a Korean War Veteran. Vince was a member of the FBI National Academy Associates, past President of the St. Louis County Police Retirees Association, Trustee of St. Louis County Retirement Board from 2002-2007, a member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2184 and a proud member of the STAGS A.C. since its inception in 1947. Most importantly, though, he was a member of our family. He led us, laughed with us, and loved us. He will be forever missed.

Services: Visitation at Kutis South County Chapel 5255 Lemay Ferry Rd. Tuesday, February 22, from 4-8 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 4220 Ripa Avenue 63125 on Wednesday, February 23 at 10 am. with burial following at 11:30 at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family is grateful for donations to BackStoppers, Inc.

  3. My condolences to the Manning family on the passing of Captain Manning. I met him during my police career with Clayton PD and would see him occasionally at Bread Company in the past few years. He was a very kind man and a true gentleman. May he Rest In Peace.

Was destined to be a leader. Will miss him at our monthly reunions

  7. Vince was my father-in-law. I did not know him during his younger years, and only for a brief period while he was a police officer. But I have known him for over 30 years. A very early memory is when his daughter, now my wife Patti, and I were to take a trip to Chicago for Thanksgiving, and Patti got sick. Knowing that I had no other plans, he and Alma invited me to Thanksgiving dinner at their house. They hardly knew me, but treated me as family. I cherish the fact that a year or two later, I became part of their family. I can honestly say Vince was one of the finest gentlemen I ever knew–principled, kind, generous, and always thoughful of other persons. I miss him already, but he is etched in my memory. He will live for as long as I do in my mind, heart and soul.

  9. What we remember about those who have fallen is not what is engraved in a stone monument, it’s what they have woven into the lives of others.

  13. I’m sorry I can’t be at the wake tonight (dang Covid). Vince is ranked up with my own dad which is very high. Just a kind, soft spoken man who always had a smile. I loved seeing him when I worked at Bread Co. My deepest sympathy to the entire family. He will be greatly missed.

  15. I delayed posting because I thought the words might come, but I realize there will never be enough or the right ones to share just how heavy my heart is. At the same time I am so incredibly grateful for him and to him, and that brings me much happiness and peace. There is no question this world is a better place and I am a better person because he was in it. He didn’t know a stranger and always left a conversation with a new friend. He was my biggest fan…at my games from a little girl to my years as a coach…and at my kids (his great ones) games through this past October. There are so many stories and memories… he loved big and was loved big! I know that “his blood runs through my instrument” (Leader of the Band by Dan Fogelberg) and he is with me always.
