Montgomery, Elsie (nee Horst)

April 30, 1926 - March 30, 2025

Elsie Horst Montgomery, 98, of Crestwood, Missouri, passed away, leaving a legacy of dedication and unwavering spirit, in Athens Georgia on March 30, 2025.  She was the 3rd of 3 daughters, born to Edward and Elsie (Volm) Horst.  She is survived by her sons, Rick Montgomery; Tom (Renee) Montgomery, Her grandchildren, Michael (Lauren) Montgomery, and Emily Montgomery.  Her 4 great-grandchildren, Liam, Mason, Rhett, and Emma as well as her beloved nieces and extended family .   She is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Wilbur (Monty) Montgomery, her parents and her 2 sisters Henriettte Myers and Bernice Goss.

She was a proud 1948 graduate of Harris Teachers College, St. Louis Mo., taught school for many years in the St. Louis City School system.  She shaped young minds at Wade School on The Hill, later finishing her teaching career at the Episcopal Church of the Advent Nursery School.   She was married on April 17, 1948, to the love of her life, Wilbur.  Together they built a life full of love and laughter and many friends.  She was never one to sit still; she got very active in charitable organization; Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, and with her husband alongside at KETC (PBS) TV Auction and Flee Market.  She was named Salvation Women of the Year, and Crestwood Sunset Hill Women of the year.

Her life was full of rich friendships, deep faith and endless generosity.  She loved to host dinner parties, holiday gathering and bridge luncheons.  Having people around her table for good food and stories that grew funnier with every telling.  Her devotion to family was her foundation and supported them with unshakable devotion.  She will be greatly missed and loved forever by her family and friends.

SERVICES:  Visitation at Kutis Affton Chapel (10151 Gravois Road Affton, Missouri 63123) on Tuesday, April 8, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. then taken to St. Lucas United Church of Christ (11735 Denny Road St. Louis, Missouri 63126) for funeral service Wednesday, April 9, 10:00 a.m.  Interment Bellerive Gardens Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Salvation Army appreciated.
