Douglas “Doug” Herman Romine, of St. Louis, Mo., passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 31, 2022, after a short illness. He was 78 years old and a dedicated husband, father, son, brother-in-law uncle, and friend to many.
Doug was born on October 7, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo., as the only child to Agnes (Bromeier) and Julius Romine. He attended school at St. Wencenlaus Elementary, St. George Primary School and Bishop DuBourg High School. It was during his senior year of high school in 1961 that Doug met his wife Kathy Boese and the two were married 6 years later in 1967 at St. George Catholic Church.
Doug followed in his father’s footsteps after graduating high school and went to work for General Motors in the Wentzville parts division in 1962. During his 32 years of service at GM, Doug also served in the U.S. Army reserves from 1963 to 1968 and opened a side business from his garage on the weekends repairing lawnmowers and outboard motors after teaching himself small engine repair. After retiring from GM in 1996,, Doug started Kathy’s Handyman, a small construction and handyman business that he operated until he was no longer physically able to do so.
Doug and Kathy made a home in the Mehlville suburb of St. Louis, living in the same house for 55 years that Doug purchased a few months before they got married. He took great pride in being a homeowner and kept their house up meticulously both inside and out. In 1978 their son and only child Jason was born.
Doug loved being out in nature traveling, sightseeing, hunting and especially fishing. In the summertime, he could often be found on a tractor driving around the family farm in St. James, Mo., doing all sorts of chores and upkeep. When he wasn’t outdoors, you could often find him watching cooking shows. He loved trying out new recipes and spent a great deal of time bookmarking all the cookbooks in his collection.
Doug’s real passion in life though was spending time with his wife and son, who was very active in scouting and sports. Doug never missed a single campout or game. Doug became a scout leader while his son was in the Boy Scouts and he loved it so much he continued as a scout leader for another 15 years influencing a generation of young men into becoming future leaders.
Doug will be remembered as someone you could count on to always lend a hand. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Boese) Romine of St, Louis, Mo., son, Jason Romine of Seattle, Wash., and his beloved dog Colt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and Julius Romine of St. James, Mo. and his other beloved dog Buddy.
