With heavy hearts, we share the unexpected passing of Pauline Rita McDonald, 59, of St. Louis, Missouri, on May 17, 2025.
She is preceded in death by her parents Carolyn (nee Caputa) and Richard McDonald, her uncles, Gene Balossi and Sam Caputa; her aunt, Joan Costello; and her dear cousin, Marie Schroeder. She is survived by her friends at Sunrise House L’Arche community; her sisters Josie (John) McCarthy and Rose (Tom) Fagan; her nieces and nephews: Peter, Rick (Alexa), Martha (Will), Mary, Matt, Cara, Ean, Claire, Maggie, and Will; her great-niece and nephews; aunts Pauline Balossi and Mary Caputa; uncle Don Siegal. Pauline was born October 1, 1965 and was raised on The Hill. She attended Epiphany Special Education program and graduated from St. Joseph Vocational Center. Pauline worked at Projects, Inc. for over 20 years before continuing to serve her community in different roles before she retired.
For over 10 years, Pauline lived in community alongside people with and without disabilities. She was one of the founding core members of L’Arche St. Louis, and actively participated in many aspects of L’Arche life, including community nights, the walk-a- thon, dances, cooking and hosting dinner parties. There are fond memories of Pauline sitting in her recliner and knitting.
Pauline’s gentle spirit shone through her many hobbies. She loved to bowl and was a proud member of the choir at the College Church. She learned to knit and crochet at Shaw Community School and later joined the St. Ambrose prayer shawl ministry. A thoughtful crafter, Pauline touched many lives by her kindness through the handmade knitted gifts and personalized cards she lovingly created and shared. Pauline loved all things pink, Mickey Mouse and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Pauline was the matriarch of L’Arche St. Louis. Like a big sister to so many of us. Her beautiful smile lit up the room. And her wit and sense of humor second to none. Our loss is profound. We send our love to the McDonald family who Pauline cherished so much and feel priviledged to have been her second family for nearly 14 years at L’Arche St Louis.
Paula Kilcoyne, Community Leader/Executive Director, L’Arche St Louis
We came to know Pauline when we began volunteering at the L’Arche houses last August. Pauline taught me, Karen, to knit. Every week she eagerly looked forward to seeing my work and she celebrated my progress. Our last visit with her she asked us to pray for her cousin, Marie Schroeder, who died only a few days later. We will miss Pauline and her beautiful smile. Our condolences to the McDonald family and to the entire L’Arche community. She will be greatly missed.
Pauline was one of the first people to greet us when we began attending L’Arche events nine years ago. Our daughter Bridget loved seeing Pauline each week at Rockabilities, and at various L’Arche functions, and looked up to her as a role model at L’Arche. Our family will miss Pauline’s smile and gentle spirit. We are holding Pauline’s family and all who loved her in our hearts. She touched so many people, and she will always be part of L’Arche STL.
I didn’t know Pauline well, but I remember her fondly from seeing her and talking to her at L’Arche and Faith and Light community events. I think she may even have participated in a few of the Special Religious Education prayer days at Seven Holy Founders that we held many years ago. Pauline always had a smile for everyone, and she was a joy to talk to. I remember that she loved to craft and do artwork. Sending love and prayers to Pauline’s family and friends…
On behalf of the Reel Family, I wish to express to Pauline’s family-sisters Josie (John) McCarthy and Rose (Tom) Fagan; her nieces and nephews: Peter, Rick (Alexa), Martha (Will), Mary, Matt, Cara, Ean, Claire, Maggie, and Will; her great-niece and nephews; aunts Pauline Balossi and Mary Caputa; uncle Don Siegal as well as cousins & her Sunrise House family, our deepest sorrow to you on your loss, but at the same time we celebrate Heaven’s gain.
My daughter Clarissa, son Clardy Jr aka CJ and I loved attending the ice cream socials and other events held at Sunrise house and to have had the chance to meet Pauline. I am grateful for being able to attend the breakfasts at SLU Highschool in support of keeping the work alive that L’Arche does and all I learned from Pauline and the other residents at Sunrise House when it came to understanding my son. Pauline will be greatly missed, but at this time she will be forever celebrated in my heart.
Steve, Shelley, and I are praying for all that is needed for Pauline’s family , her L’Arche community , her friends-for comfort and peace. We were blessed to know Pauline.
