Stokes, SSND, Sr. Mary Helen, passed away peacefully on Sat. Aug. 30, 2025. She is survived by her brothers Tom (Becky) Stokes of Jefferson City, MO and Charlie (Laurie) Stokes of Sherman, CT. She was beloved by family, friends, classmates, Sisters in Community and SSND Associates.
Services: Visitation and Prayer service will be held at the Sarah Community, 12284 DePaul Dr. Bridgeton, MO 63044, On Tuesday Sept. 16, from 2:30 – 3:30pm in the Marian Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday Sept. 17, at Theresa Center Chapel, 320 E. Ripa Ave., 63125, with visitation at 10am, Sharing of memories at 10:45am, and Mass at 11:15am. Interment Sancta Maria in Ripa Cemetery. Memorial Mass at The Cathedral of St. Joseph, 2305 W. Main, Jefferson City, MO 65109 will be held on Thursday Sept. 18 at 10:30am A Service of Kutis Funeral Home, City Chapel.
Kindness always comes to mind when I think of Sr. Mary Helen. Even her voice conveyed kindness and empathy. A rare and special soul, she was a comforting presence, and I am better for knowing her. May she rest in eternal peace. Thanks and bless your Sr. Mary Hellen.
I knew Sister Helen Stokes when I lived in Jefferson City Missouri with the Irish Sisters of Mercy. Accept my condolences to her family and the sisters of Notre Dame. She was Always a pleasant and loving person.

I was lucky to have ministered with Mary Helen at BREM Catholic Social Ministry. She was one of the most creative women I have worked with over the years. She developed a Women’s Support group and developed a plan to increase voter participation in a poor neighborhood. She was fun loving and caring. Sorry I cannot be at the funeral as I am away on retreat. My prayers for her family.
