In Loving Memory

Gravatt, Charles Marvin

Gravatt, Charles Marvin died peacefully on August 9, 2022, at Delmar Gardens West Nursing Home after an extended illness.  He was born in Wesco, Missouri to Maude and Henry Gravatt on August 29, 1929.  He is survived by his daughter Deborah Mallory (George) of Houston, Texas and his son Michael Gravatt of St. Louis, his former daughter-in-law Rose Mueller as well as grandchildren Charles Springhart, Brianna and Taylor Gravatt, all of St. Louis.  He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Lloyd and Vernon, his dear wife of 63 years Julie, and his former son-in-law John Springhart.  He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.  He was a member of Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Madison, Illinois.

Charles, often called “Chuck”, grew up in St. Louis and was an avid baseball player on the fields of Forest Park.  He played minor league baseball with enthusiasm until an arm injury ended his career.  He served his country as a member of the US Army during the Korean War.  He was an expert in Morse Code and served as an instructor until he was honorably discharged.  He spent his working career as a regional salesman for the Whirlpool Corporation.

The family would like to thank the staff at Delmar Gardens West for their care of Charles over the past two years and to the staff of Pathways Hospice and Palliative Care for their support in his waning days.

Visitation and funeral service will be held at Kutis Funeral Home, South County, 5255 Lemay Ferry Road in Mehlville on Tuesday August 16, 2022 beginning at 10:30 am until service at Noon.  The service at 12 noon will be officiated by Father Nicholas Finley. His body will be interred next to his wife in the Mount Hope Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Pathways Hospice Foundation.

Gravatt a hard working player whose team spirit made him extremely popular with his fellow players and fans may give up baseball to enter business. He’ll leave for St Louis today.

  7. Chuck Gravatt who pitched with the Bristol Twins in 1948 and 1949 is wearing a new uniform. Chuck has been in Uncle Sam’s Army for the past four months based at Fort Jackson S C where he played baseball with the Thirteenth Infantry. Passing through Bristol en route west to another assignment Chuck stopped over briefly to see ‘ some of his friends. He’s In radio school and enjoying his work. Gravatt never a big winner with the Twins still was a valuable man to have around. He was a great hustler and was a fill-in man both as a pinch hitter pinch runner and utility man. He also did a good job on the coaching line in directing traffic around the base paths. Chuck’s best year with the Twins was under Ben Geraghty in 1949. He had a 5-5 record on the mound and batted .270.
